Let me tell you about a boy I knew, his name was Kole. Kole was eager to impress one very special lady in his life. His best friend, Mercedes. He spent their youth being her best friend, he watched as man after man always tried to impress her and they always fell flat on their faces. It was a point when he was convinced that she was waiting for him. But that was not the case either, when he finally had the courage to ask her on a date, she refused him saying that she only saw him as a friend.

Now, what about Mercedes? From what Kole saw, she may as well have been the most beautiful woman in the world. Her skin was flawless, and she had the most beautiful eyes in such a unique shade of color, and her dark hair was so silky as it flowed in the gentlest of breezes. She was thin, yet athletic, her breasts were the perfect size… and there was no obstacle that she could not surpass, no challenge that would go unattempted… and unconquered.

Mercedes was opinionated, she did not hold back when she thought she was witnessing an injustice. She spoke her mind when she heard ignorance that needed to be corrected. When she heard that something was wrong, she did not meekly ignore it, she brought it to everyone's attention and made sure that that wrongness was made right. She had no fear of society's response to her.

She was a kind woman, she was gentle as a warm breeze on a summer's day. Saw a person who went hungry, she would bring them a sandwich. She always had a smile for anyone that had something to say, and a laugh for anyone who wanted to better themselves. She loved animals, dogs and cats were easy, and in her home they were numerous, but any animal had a soft spot in her heart. But maybe she was on a pedestal that Kole held her on, maybe she was this amazing…

But frustratingly for Kole, Mercedes never noticed him for anything more than what he already was: her best friend. He tried on more than one occasion to win her over, and she always turned him down with a smile never to hurt him. When others would have rejected him for the frustration of his attempts, she reasoned with him. But despite everything, in Kole’s heart he could not give up, he wanted to prove himself to her. And he would start at the absolute bottom, and work his way up to impress her, to prove himself to her.

Mercedes enjoyed martial arts, it was something she had done since she was a very little girl, and she was very good at it. He didn't start until after he had finished high school, and he practiced. He worked his way up, strengthening his skills, sharpening his instincts, developing his techniques and worked his way up until he achieved his black belt. He sparred with Mercedes, and she was very proud of him for how much he had accomplished in such a short time.

They were both dressed in their gis. They bow to each other, and begin. As far as not a true fight as they were not trying to hurt each other, it was a point system. And every day they would practice against each other, for the most part… Mercedes would win, she never gave him a sympathetic victory, but she always encouraged him. Then came the day that he scored more than her, she was not discouraged or broke. She was actually excited for Kole, proud of him, and told him to keep up the good work. Of course he had to throw in a joke that he wondered if he had earned a first date yet or not.

She simply led with that warm smile of hers and told him that beating her in combat was not the way to her heart. She was proud of him and impressed by him, but it did not change her feelings towards him.

What was Mercedes's favorite thing to do in the whole world? She loved art, and she loved going to museums. Kole learned a lot from her as they often went together. Kole didn't know a lot of art himself, but he wanted to learn… for her.

He took classes, it started with simple things like trying to draw a bowl of fruit. Eventually he read books on how to draw comic book characters. He studied things like color theory and moved on to practicing with acrylics and oils.

But even those weren't enough, he worked with clay, tried chalks and pastels, paper mache sculptures and so much more. He got so good at it, that a local museum dedicated an exhibit to his artistic prowess. Mercedes was the first to arrive at his exhibit and give him a big hug telling him how well he had done. She pointed out all the great things that she had seen in his art. He was 25 and was one of the best artists that she had known.

Of course this was the point when he decided to ask her if she wanted to go on a dinner date with the best local artist she had ever seen.

Her smile spread widely and pushed into her eyes, it was a genuine and friendly smile. And she said that she would love to go to dinner with him, not only the best artist in the area, but her best friend, but… and oh what a large ‘but’ that was; but only as friends. And Kole was crushed. It was a nice dinner, but sadly for him, this accomplishment was not enough and he left his art behind, he needed to find another path forward. On the bright side, the dinner was nice, even if it was only as friends.

What was another thing that men were great at? Tools. Building. And that would be his next project, learning to be able to be the best at what he could do. He spent months learning to use his tools, studying videos on do-it-yourself projects. And before he knew it, he was the best handyman in the area. And for her birthday, he offered to build her an in-ground pool all by himself. It took him from April to June, and he had not only built her a pool, but he redid her deck, and the landscaping around it. And she was so grateful, she hugged him and told him that he was the best friend she could ever imagine having. But again he did not win over her heart.

The martial artist, the artist, the builder, these were not the ways to impress Mercedes, and Kole had to look further in. Further inside himself.

What else did women like? Romance… it never seemed like the thing to impress her before, from anybody. But he decided that this might be his chance. He started with poetry, learning different types of prose. They were rhyming patterns, such as abba, or aabb, or ababcc. But he found words that expressed his opinions of beauty and love, philosophy and introspection. He found ways that didn't rhyme, words that conveyed his emotions… and haiku that verbally illustrated his dreams.

There were people who were impressed with his writing, and he reached out and found an agent. His book of poetry was published, and on the first page was a dedication to Mercedes. The woman who made all his accomplishments possible

Again he simply tried to show her his love, and she smiled and encouraged him, but said that she could not see him as anything more than a friend.

She went away for a few months to study. The day she returned she found several roses in her driveway lined up along her walkway, each one had a little note tied to it that expressed why she was the most amazing woman in the whole world… when she saw him, she picked up each and every flower, read them all with a big smile on her face. She gave him a hug and told him that he was so sweet. But unfortunately, she only saw him as a friend but appreciated his words.

Then one night when he was 29, knowing what her favorite meals were, he made her a home-cooked meal. He spent days practicing the best recipes, until he was convinced that he had found the best possible combination of spices and styles of cooking to make her favorite meal come true in such a unique and flavorful way. She told him it was the best meal she had ever had, but she finally sat him down, looked him in the eye, and told him simply… she is not attracted to him, and she needed him to move on.

And in a way that she would not have expected, he did move on. But he had not given up on her. He decided that he would be the best that there was at everything.

He traveled far and wide. He traveled throughout the country, and then throughout the world. He made it to the oceans, and took all the skills he had learned in his life and made himself better, and then better, until he was determined to be the best.

The connections he made while he was publishing his poetry book allowed him to expand himself. He made books on art. He's self-published a couple of comic books, which led to a brief stint working at a major comic book studio. Which by the time he was 35 had led to him being the writer and director of his own movie. Kole had become rich and famous.

Some of the most beautiful women in Hollywood adored him. If he was known as the aloof director as he never dated anyone, and so many people wondered who this mysterious Mercedes was that was always referenced in his books and even on screen. It had been over 5 years since he had been to his hometown, and yet as he talked to some of his friends he knew that Mercedes was still single. She was so beautiful, and still pursued by everybody. But nobody could win her over, and he hadn't even tried any years.

After the premiere of The Big movie, he found himself going home. He hadn't been in this town in years, and as he walked to the old park he saw her. She had a big smile on her face when she saw him, she ran up to him and gave him a big hug and congratulated him on all of his accomplishments. And he asked her once again like he had so many times before if she wanted to go on a date with a world famous writer and director. Though he was subtle enough not to mention how rich he was now.

He had been so used to her smiling when he rejected her, it almost broke his heart when she looked down and frowned, reminding him that she had asked him not to pursue her any longer. He nodded his head, but should have been so long that he had hoped that she would have changed her mind, or at least let so many years pass that asking would not have bothered her.

And for the first time in his life, he felt like he was losing his dream of happiness. Nothing he could do could win her over, he left her and walked toward the old woods that they would walk in. For the first time in his life he felt hopeless. His eyes downcast, his head held low, and he trudged ever so slowly. He had proven to be the best at everything he tried, everything he attempted, but the one thing he strived for was beyond his grasp…

Kole sat down on an old tree stump, and as he contemplated his inferiority, the only challenge he ever accepted in life that he could not overcome, he heard a small voice, “what's wrong with you?"

He saw a little blue glowing light in front of him, and as his eyes squinted he saw a little woman with wings floating in front of his nose, not even an inch tall. A pixie. She seemed to have an innocent smile, but he remembered that pixies were known for being pests and playing pranks. But she asked him again, her voice was kind, so he told her. He told her the story of his life and how he had made so many accomplishments in the pursuit of winning one woman. A woman who would never, ever return his affection.

The pixie laughed and told him that his dream is not dead. That pixies were known for granting wishes. But he had to pick the right wish.

He said that he wished he was the person that would win her heart. Of course the pixie had to laugh at him, and asked why he didn't change her and make her fall in love with the type of man he was.

Kole, being the philosopher and poet, reasoned that he had spent a great deal of time thinking in his years. And this question came right to him with barely a second to think of it. To change her would be to change the woman he had been enamored with for years. Beyond that: why not change himself for her? As that was the true sacrifice. But there was one lingering thought, he did want to make sure that he knew exactly who he had always been.

The pixie thought it was cute, she flew to and then dove into a pond that was a stone throw’s away from him, she emerged holding a simple penny. She whispered to the penny until it started growing blue, and she dropped it into the palm of Kole's hand, “make your wish, Kole.”

Kole made his wish. He wished to be the person that Mercedes would fall in love with instantly, and he would know the difference between who he was and who he is. And with the pixie’s instruction he threw the penny across the path and into the nearby pond.

He thanked the pixie, but as Kole didn't see anything happening he said goodbye. Then he started walking home. As he walked he never even noticed the magic engulfing his body, was never aware as his masculine physique faded to something more androgynous. And then as he lost his height, nearly a foot shorter than he had been previously. He was not aware as the style and color of his clothes changed.

She was not aware as her breasts filled her chest, or how the dress that hung off her thighs and snug around her ass flowed in the breeze. She did not notice the makeup that appeared on her face, or that walking in high heels was as natural for her as walking in sneakers was for Kole.

As he emerged from the woods, he made his way home. And on his steps there was Mercedes, he did not expect to see her there. And she looked up and saw her and smiled. There's a look in her eyes that Kole had never seen before, and she stood up and approached him but called him Pandora… and that's when Kole noticed it, he was a woman. His wish had made him the perfect person for Mercedes, and the perfect person for Mercedes wasn't a man. It was a woman that was very much not like the woman she was.

And for the first time, it was true hope in Kole's heart when ‘she’ approached Mercedes and saw that there was something more in her eyes. And something happened that Kole never expected, Mercedes made the first move. She put her arms around her waist, and Mercedes’s unpainted lips kissed Pandora's very much painted lips.

… And the world seemed right. This moment surpassed every moment he had experienced… It was simply… The Best.

THE END.
